  • This is an exciting role in our NHS SBS Sustainability and Social Impact team to join as our Senior Net Zero and Sustainability Manager. This role is the lead for environment related activity and strategy in NHS Shared Business Services. It is responsible for setting and leading on the carbon reduction strategy, advising, and delivering on our Science Based Net-Zero by 2040 targets alongside working with our group organisation Sopra Steria to align and streamline carbon reduction activity.

    Alongside internal delivery, this role will be the lead for our customer focused deliver on scope 3 carbon tracking. This supports the management of a data manager to oversee, lead and deliver a pipeline of opportunity in 2027 and beyond. This exciting aspect requires customer engagement, management of the team to ensure delivery on time and to budget.

    You will also support in cascading and sharing messaging through the organisation on what we are doing to ensure we are sustainable. This includes communicating with stakeholders right across the organisation in all levels of seniority.

    This role will act as an SME for teams, colleagues, and external stakeholders on carbon reduction and therefore will act as the 'go to' to inform the business of any key risks or challenges related to climate change or carbon emissions.

    This role will also lead on all related environmental policy, both the creation and upkeep of annual submissions such as our Carbon Reduction Plan, but also strategy documentation and updates on annual progress.

    Acting Sustainably
    • Develop and implement sustainable practices and initiatives to reduce environmental impact across NHS SBS operations, responsible for our progression on the Net-Zero by 2040 agenda.
    • Lead the development and implementation of carbon reduction strategies and initiatives, ensuring alignment with net zero targets.
    Innovation & Change
    • Identify and champion innovative technologies, processes, and practices to drive sustainability and support the transition to a net zero carbon footprint, this includes the management of a scope 3.1 data mapping system which will require innovation and future proofing throughout the life of contracts
    • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to pilot and scale innovative solutions for reducing emissions and promoting environmental sustainability.
    Stakeholder Engagement & Management
    • Managing a data manager with delivery as a core goal, ensuring they are supported and developed but also overseeing strong results
    • Engage with internal stakeholders, including senior leadership, departments, and employees, to promote awareness and understanding of environmental goals and initiatives.
    Policy standards and development
    • Stay abreast of relevant environmental regulations, standards, and best practices, and ensure NHS SBS compliance with legal requirements.
    • Flag any key policy risks or concerns in each line of business that we need to be aware of, manage or mitigate against
    Managing complexity
    • Analyse complex data and information related to environmental performance, carbon emissions, and sustainability metrics to inform decision-making and strategy development.
    • Lead and manage the full end to end scope 3 carbon emissions product at NHS SBS. This includes necessary internal upskilling, customer engagement, pipeline activity and delivery of critical customer projects, often more than one at once and prioritising effectively.
    What you'll bring
    • Environmental Management experience is key; carbon footprinting and calculating.
    • Experience in benchmarking tools such as CDP
    • Knowledge of Carbon Emissions Scope 1 2 and 3
    • Knowledge of methodologies to reduce emissions and how to calculate them
    • Customer engagement experience, particularly in the NHS
    • Data management experience (Ideally on Alteryx, PowerBI)
