The position
Reporting to the Service Engineering Manager, North Europe, the primary responsibility of the role is to provide technical design support to our Northern Europe Solar and Storage O&M Projects department, who have a pipeline of varied project work including site-wide upgrades and repowering. The Solar Design Engineer will enhance delivery of our operational project services by providing electrical design work and technical advice, improving the solutions presented to clients.
Accountabilities
Be the key point of contact for Solar and Storage O&M Projects Team in providing technical support such as electrical defect solutions, repowering plant design works from feasibility study to commissioning, and current system design analyses.
Fulfil and discharge Principal Designer duties for the Projects Team where required
Achieve and maintain Design Level Approval, working closely with the Group Engineering department under the Management of Electrical Design procedures
Provide remote technical support via phone, email, or through the 'Support App' to Solar and Storage O&M and other departments in the company
Provide on-site support where required
Develop documentation for operational use (Work Instructions, Method Statements, etc.)
Develop design documentation such as general arrangement drawings, single line diagrams and schematics.
Review new and updated manufacturer documentation and technical standards with the aim of updating internal technical procedures and site design
Support documentation management and control
Assist in HSQE incident investigations and root cause analyses, and support in the delivery of improved design and/or procedures to mitigate risks identified
Support in quality control
Foster collaboration with the wider Service Engineering department, ensuring knowledge is shared across the different regions
Support in virtual or face-to-face meetings with Clients on technical issues, where necessary
Knowledge
Understanding CDM Regulations and the role of Principal Designer
Good knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation
Good knowledge and understanding of solar PV systems and sub-systems
Principles of High Voltage operations
Familiarity with relevant regulations, standards and codes of practice
Skills
Proficiency in AutoCAD
Proficiency in PVSyst
Excellent attitude to safety
Good communication skills, fluent written and spoken English
Good IT skills for writing reports and developing documentation
A coaching mentality, being able to upskill and train others
Experience
Experience undertaking Principal Designer role under CDM
Experience with solar PV system design projects
Experience with engineering designs and solutions for technical challenges
Experience with repowering and upgrade project works
Experience developing technical drawings and documentation
Experience in PV design software and HV grading studies
Experience working in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams
Qualifications
An NVQ 3 or equivalent qualification in electrical engineering
18th edition
Inspection and testing qualifications such as C&G 2391 and 2394/5
Health & Safety qualifications (e.g. IOSH Managing Safely, SMSTS)
Full UK driving license
