We wish to appoint an Environmental and Analytical Facility Technician to join the School of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (SBBS), which carries out excellent education, research, and public engagement activities, supported by 26 administrative staff and over 30 technical staff.
The post is part of the Technical Services career family at Queen Mary University of London, supporting functions across multiple sites and providing infrastructure and support for research, teaching, and learning activities.
The main responsibilities include operating and maintaining environmental analytical facility instrumentation and supporting field research. Equipment includes, among others, an Agilent 8890 ECD & FID Analyzer, Thermo Delta V Plus & Sercon Integra 2 isotope ratio mass spectrometers, Skalar San wet chemistry analyser, and Agilent 1200 HPLC.
The post holder will also provide general lab management support in the Biology Department, such as health & safety inductions, equipment recordkeeping, aquarium maintenance, chemical inventories, waste disposal, and housekeeping, under the direction of the Biology Department Lab Manager.
To be considered, you should have substantial understanding and technical experience working in a research laboratory environment, supporting research processes and researchers, particularly in maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting environmental analytical laboratory equipment, as well as supporting fieldwork.
You should have experience in environmental sample preparation and analysis, and data processing using techniques such as isotope ratio mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, HPLC, and wet chemistry analysis.
A strong understanding of health and safety legislation relevant to environmental analytical laboratories, especially regarding gases and radiation, is essential.
This role requires on-campus work due to the nature of the tasks. While primarily on-site, remote work may be considered where feasible and where sufficient campus coverage exists to meet service needs. The position is fixed-term for 18 months.
